The Thirst of Flesh

The body is a thirst, and thirst the body’s doom,
A flower of longing born but for the tomb;
It yearns for other flesh, with fevered breath,
And gathers drops of pleasure out of death.
We drink of love—and sorrow fills the bowl;
What unseen god devised this snare of soul?

The body is a thirst no rain can still,
A sweet unrest obedient to the will
Of ancient Desire, whose warm and secret fire
Makes flesh seek flesh, and longing kindle higher.
From mortal touch another mortal grows,
To bear the selfsame hunger, grief, and woes.
Thus through the years the crimson river flows—
A treachery of Heaven no mortal knows.

Birth follows death, and death awakens birth;
We come like wandering shadows back to earth.
The flesh grows ripe, then withers into clay—
But whence the life that will not pass away?
Where is its home? What country claims the soul?
What distant star remembers whence we stole?

We seek one moment’s rapture in an embrace,
And summon yet another life to take our place;
Desire begets desire, and breath gives breath,
And every cradle softly dreams of death.
The child shall thirst as once the father sighed,
And seek another body by his side.

O endless wheel! O melancholy stream!
Are birth and love but fragments of a dream?
Why clothe the soul in this desiring clay,
If every kiss must flower into decay?
Why light the lamp of longing in the breast,
If neither flesh nor longing shall find rest?

The body is a thirst, and thirst its chain;
Desire the honey hiding drops of pain.
We drink, we dream, we multiply—and go,
Leaving our thirst to those who follow slow.
And still through birth and death the dark tides roll—
God's hidden treachery against the deathless soul.
