Varsha visits Vidisha - 13

When Varsha was getting ready for the college his sister Manjusha  stopped his way and said " we must go to Subbavaram and it is very important." Varsha said" I guess that there is a function in Vidisha's family.    I should not be accompanying you for ladies functions.

Ask mother, she will go with you" Manju insisted that Varsha followed her. Varsha looked at Manili for her " yes I will " response but Malini demanded that Manju be escorted and Bairreddy be reprimanded. Bharatavarsha was bewildered at his mother's orders. Mother's word is an apex court order to any righteous son in India. That is essence of  holy literature of India which has been transformed into tradition. Yes this knowledge is practiced by righteous men handed down to generations and generations of men until the modern day cinema attacked the tradition with a trend of parents going over friendly and boozing with adult children advcing them in love matters. The cinema goers are  infected with the trends. They are the tradition - booers but Varsha is a cine goer nor a tradition booer. He is a scholar of Telugu a language filled with rich manners that honours parents and elders and unflinching devotion to the nation.

Mom, but it looks odd and grotesque if I attend the ladies function. Let kesava go with her. before Malini responded Kesava said " I am ready " with boyish enthusiasm. Malini smiled at Kesava and fondled his head. She said to varsha " There is no party and no fun at her place, Bairreddy is besotted with Vidisha  in Buhuvanavijayam program he lost his heart to her. in spite of her stiff resistance he is persuading her , wooing her hand. He is hellbent on marrying her. Vidisha is very much worried about it.

Varsh "How did you know?"

Malini " Manju told me and Ahalya confirmed it "

"Oh ! It's awful! But I am going to college by the by I must make arrangements to Mysore Literary program. I have been invited as the chief guest I should not baulk way"

Why Mysore! you start to Manhattan with wind speed if there is a literary program.

Varsha smiled sheepishly while Malini shouted "  Hell with your literary programs. Cancel all programs , take leave from the college and go to Vidisha. After all she is your childhood friend is in a helpless condition." Varsha spoke no more. He turned to Manjusha and said " Let us take the bus."

                                                                   ***

Dwaraka bus station in Aseelmetta  is called DBS  Complex. The central bus station remains busy as 1,900 buses including 904 city buses and 1,000 rural buses to various destinations pass through the complex  every day.  DBS complex handles 60,000 passengers each day.

Bus no 28p crossed the outskirts of the city. The green fields on either side of the road were delightful. Varsha and Manju sat at the window. Manju's mind is preoccupied with the visions of evil deeds of Bairreddy. Varsha closes his eyes now and then. Varsha 's mind had the flashes of his childhood. He remembers the games he played with Vidisha in the green fields., under trees. Manju was five years younger than him. The bus was moving steadily. Cool air was touching both their faces. Manjjusha said " The green fields are dwindling day by day, we see buildings in place of fields. "  Varsha smiled and said " we must call this development "Manju was seemingly upset. She is always so from her childhood. if her mother or brother doesn't agree with her she will be upset and she needs lot of cajoling. How can you smile? Don't you have concern about the dwindling greenery?" "I have  concern about our over population." said Varsha and  closed his eyes. "At least don't you think about Vidisha's predicament with Bairreddy? It seems that you are not in this world" complained Manju. Yes, I was in the world of imagination. I collect the  passing visuals through the window with my eyes and combine them with my words. " said Varsha.

You are always in imagination, not always but mostly.  people go to movies to forget the stress of their  humdrum life. That is also a world of imagination for people with creativity disability. I open  the door to  a different world with the power of my imagination. Creativity is everlasting joy and unparalleled satisfaction.  When Varsha finished Manju asked him "Tell me what you have imagined?"  Varsha " The sweetest part of our life, our childhood. It was the time Vidisha's family lived near Anandanilayam. Her father used to work in Visakha.

Manju : We all used to go to school together.  Agastya used to come from Aseelmetta.  mother  Aruna also lived  with mother Damini when she had bad time.

Varsha :  I still remember how we played together

Manju:  I remember how  we quarrelled together.   Vidisha had bitten your hand when you called her black girl.  She was such a rebel in her childhood.

The discussion was heart-warming Manju forgot her melancholy. Her mood was elevated and enriched with the thoughts of childhood.  suddenly the bus had a jerk.  she was dragged into present. just then they saw a dilapidated house

The House

We always saw the house from distance

we never crossed it without assistance

Nobody has ever its door  knocked

for it's always with a padlock locked

The iron fence around is rusted

the windows are broken and dusted

The garden is full of weeds over grown

the purple stemmed flowers often groan

The house was a terror

the sight of it brought to mind horror

It looked like an weird child crying

or some secret shadow spying

When I was young it looked paranormal

when I grew out of fears it looked normal

Manju was a bit surprised how her brother was able to tell her a sonnet instantly on the house. The bus stopped at a small village. A woman passenger looking so weird got into the bus. She has the air of a witch. She sat behind the driver. Varsha and Manju are three seats behind her. Manju looked at Varsha. Varsha understood what her looks mean. She is just like the witch who lived near their house. Varsha got it and said

The witch

In the shanty town near the tank

where people usually drank

Beside the cinema there is a  hut

There sits a woman who looks like a slut

She is a rich witch with a terrible face

In  weird ways she treats each case

When I saw her " Is witchcraft a reality?"

I instantly thought of practicality

A boy victimized by black magic was brought

by a group of people who the remedy sought

She stuck needles to the boy's body, began chanting

Her gold chain was stolen by somebody who's missing

the needles dropped down on their own, the boy's pain fled

Outside the hut the thief found dead in a pool of blood

Manjusha felt that her childhood incidents and stories were plying live in front of her. Her blood chilled with the sonnet  on the witch they had seen in childhood. Before the bus reached Sabbavaram Varsha had seen many such spectacles and presented a sonnet each time when he saw something.  Manju was bewildered. She could see a different person in her brother. They got down from the bus the first word she spoke was  "You have feet on the earth mind in stars. They started walking towards Vidisha's house.

                                              ***

After a long walk in the foot path across the paddy fields Varsha and Manju reached Vidisha's house. Amid the vast green fields the house looks like a boat in the ocean. The distant hills look like pyramids and the tall palmyra trees look like soldiers.  Varsha and Manju opened the small wicket gate and entered Vidisha's compound. It was 500 square yard area around. There are plantain trees and many plants. It was a pleasant sight.

Vidisha and her Mother Ahalya came out to receive Varsha and Manju. Vidisha smiles and invites them in. Manju was touched by the nature. She was transfixed to the country side view for a while. The scenery was amazing. The fields are lovely.  I remember Thomas Hardy's "Far away from the madding crowds" said Manju. Ahalya laughed and said "  Umm I don't understand what you youngsters have in mind. Varsha said " It means a small rural resort like this house. The end of noise and strife." Ahalya laughed more loudly and said " Go the the Well wash your feet and get in." They both walked to the well to wash their feet. The well is wide and deep. There is a round platform around it. just beside the well there are a dozen plantain trees. In the cool shadow of the banana trees slept a cow. "Her name is sita." said  Ahalya went in to prepare coffee. While vidisha brought a towel and stood beside Bharatavarsha and Manjusha at the well.

It is a part of Indian culture and a mark of respect to wait on guests and give them water to wash feet and towel. Do you sell milk? asked Manju. No we serve the cow. It is It is my second mother. said Vidisha.  Varsha was pleasantly surprised to see the cow and her her words. He said" Good to hear that you serve cow. A few lucky people have this chance. In India a cow not only respected but also worshipped.  Cow was held sacred by Vedas. The Rig Veda refers to the cow as being “aghnya” (not to be killed or injured) To the people of the Rig Veda, a cow was identical with wealth, and there was no Lakshmi-worship in those days. Nature and creation were worshipped said Varsha.

Manju and Vidisha walked to the cow. The cow stood on its legs.  Manju was fondling her dewlap. It was soft and silky. Suddenly from behind the haystack a baby calf came running to the mother. Oh you got a haystack! in the back yard?! we got a cow shed too! said Vidisha and took Manju to the back yard. Hibiscus, marry gold chrysanthemum   plants are all over. They were bearing flowers. When they came back the calf was drinking mother's milk from the udder. The mother was licking the baby.

Manju washed her feet. while taking the towel from Vidisha she said " I know why your mother laughed when Varsha explained the meaning of Far away from madding crowds as calm and peaceful rural resort.  Is Bairredy getting bad?" He is getting worse" replied Vidisha. Tears rolled down from her cheeks. When vidisha and Manjusha were talking Bharatavarsha was doing  sandhyavandanam. Manjusha explained that it is a daily routine to her brother that he offers prayers to the Sun three times a day.   She wiped her feet  and said "Don't worry. We came here to end your problem. My brother knows Bairreddy's brother Nagireddy." Vidisha smiled and said "  let us go. "

Bharatavarsha got into the hall  where the three ladies are sitting. I am quite please to see your farm house. said Varsha. Ahalya offered them coffee. " Manju and Varsha were sipping coffee. " I don't want coffee! " refused Vidisha.  Take it I have already prepared for three. her voice sounded serious.  Vidisha took the glass and reminded her Mother" Children should not ask for coffee. This is what you used to say when  I was insisting on coffee "  Manju and Vidisha are close friends. They studied in the same class. Manju fondly remembered the childhood memories.

"Now you are not a child. you are a marriageable girl. That is apple of discord." said Ahalya. Whatever be the topic it goes round and round and finally reaches there. Bharatvarsha said " Where is Vidisha's father?" He is not seen here! " He is now a fruit contractor. He employs workers and overseas the fruit picking. He stays here only a few days in a month and rest of the days he roams all over the state." said Vidisha. Ahalya's eyes got wet.  Her tone blurred. She said " This is a family without a male support." Who said there is no male support. Don't ever forget that we are there for you." Bharatavarsha consoled her. "

It is lunch time you have to eat" said Ahalya.  She forced them to take lunch despite Varsha's resistance he had to obey when Manjusha yielded. Ahalya spread mats on the floor. Vidisha brought fresh banana leaves. Later Vidisha, Manjusha and Varsha sat in a row. Ahalya was delighted to serve the guests. Vidisha was happy to eat with her friends. Ahalya started telling " You know that this family is poor.  Her father is not steady in any job since her childhood. Vidisha stopped studies after her tenth class. After her father getting into contracts our financial position is okay.  She draws portraits" Manju said "I know she was a good artist." Varsha added "She proved herself  by drawing my pictures." Vidisha knew  that it was a satire. Vidisha drew the pictures of Varsha badly with horns when they had a fight. Vidisha understood what Varsha actually means. She glanced at Varsha with a smile.

After they finished the lunch Vidisha started showing the house. You came to our house for the first time. come on let me show the house to you. said Vidisha and took Varsha with her. Manju followed. The house is tiled but very well ventilated with large windows and ventilators. A living room with village cot and two large bed rooms.  One is for parents and the other is for the daughter. Vidisha's bedroom is her studio. It was richer than  any room in the house with rich colour paints of nature portraits of men and women. Vidisha put more pictures from the cupboard on the tripod stands. Varsha turned round and round to see the pictures all over. He was abstracted from the world and the room transformed into a beautiful kaleidoscope.

Varsha was tired of watching the beautiful pictures. He sat on the wooden chair. His senses were benumbed. He saw Vidisha's portrait on the wall. It was stunning. Oh what a beautiful face she has. He never new that one day time will bring him to see her beauty. His mind could not focus on her beauty. He sees her only as a child, rather his eyes don't go beyond or his mind doesn't go beyond her child-image. The picture of Vidisha shook him. Yes, Art is immortal. Art can speak with heart. For a few seconds he forgot why he came there and relaxed languidly on the chair. Vidisha walked to the opposite wall and peeled off the paper on the picture.  Next moment Bharatavarsha felt that a fireball was catapulted at him. It was his image with veena in the hand" He was playing the veena at Bhuvanavijayam show at Municipal auditorium. His face was bright, the colours were splendid. Perhaps the image has life!   He quickly regained his senses from the shock  and said" what exactly is the problem with Bairreddy?

Manjusha came close to Vidisha. she laid her hand on her shoulders. Vidisha continued " Bairreddy He came to me like a protagonist of art. He asked me to draw this parent's pictures, later he asked me to draw his brother and sister in law.  Very frequently he used to come. Gradually I understood that he is not coming for pictures but for me.  He offered more money than I take for a portrait but I refused. He found out that money doesn't work. He changed his tune and now offers to  marry me."  Then why don't you marry? May be he is serious. said Bharatavarsha. Just then Ahalya came with fruits in a tray. He tells the same words for every girl. He has a bait for every girl.  She stopped and looked at Manjusha. she spoke with her eyes and prompted her to tell her brother something. Manju was nodding her head. Varsha understood that she was hiding something. He looked at his sister sternly and said with a commanding tone " What are you waiting for, tell me the truth!"  Manjusha said coolly " Bairreddy also proposed me" Varsha was speechless.

I will talk to Bairreddy's brother Nagireddy. I am sure he will scold him. While going home I meet him  said Varsha. Hardly did he know what shock is waiting for Manusha and Varsha.   Ahalya was quite convinced with his words  "  I must look for a suitable boy for her and see that she is married as soon as possible." she said with a light heart without knowing what pity is in store for her.

                                                                    ***

Varsha took leave of Ahalya and Vidisha and started walking across the fields. He must go to the bus stand to take the bus to go to Visakha.  As they walked a few steps he saw dozens of police walking in the fields.   Inspector general of police and other high level officials were present.  Bharatavarsha was astonished. What has brought such top level officers to a small village?! Manjusha and Vidisha stood aghast while the police walked away! Manju was inquisitive and was asking one of the villagers standing around in a group about what happened. A young man said that it was a land grabbing case .. the local MLA...Simhachalam ..while he was telling something he was stopped by an old man presumably his father " Don't get into troubles. May be they are MLA's akin, who knows."  The young man said that he doesn't know much about the case.  There are many people but all had their lips closed. For Varsha and his sister were strangers to them. They were not sure whether they were MLA's kin. There was one young man boy who was sure that they were not MLA's kin. He knows them too. His name is Maridu.

Varsha  said to Maju" Manju, let's go I must visit Nagireddy, then we have a long journey.  When they were walking away Maridu sped towards them and greeted Varsha " Namaste Manjulamma"  Varsha was surprised. Maridu, you are here! You live in the city, don't you? How do you know my sister's name?" asked Varsha. Maridu replied " I heard you call her Manju, No place is mine, I keep moving." When Maridu finished Manju said " my name is not Manjula, I am Manjusha. How do you know my brother?" That is a long story. I always have chance meetings with your brother. I will tell you what you about the land grabbing case. " said Maridu. " It is unnecessary to know, we must go" said Varsha. and started walking faster. Maridu increased his pace and followed them.   " Is it necessary to meet Nagireddy? " asked Maridu.

Bharatavarsha stopped and looked at Maridu surprisingly. " How do you know that I am going to meet him?" asked Varsha. You said to your sister and I overheard." said Maridu and grinned and continued "The police have come to arrest Nagireddy as per the court orders.  He has been taken into judicial custody for fourteen days." Bharatavarsha was stunned.  I thought he was a gentleman"  Maridu laughed and said " Gentleman! Nagireddy! He is a political goon!" Even his brother Ankireddy the chairman of your college is a gentleman either." Manju was perplexed at the revelations. "First tell me who you are , then tell me how you know my brother, then tell me how you know all these things ? Are you are journalist?" She asked Maridu a series of questions.  " He is not a journalist. He is a thief.     I have nothing to do with a thief." said Varsha sternly.

Maridu qucikly responded " My name is Maridu." He told Manjush. He then told Varsha " I was a thief. Now I am not. Though I have not given you a word your personality inspires me. Now I am doing several odd jobs not stealing often. Bharatavarsha sighed. Maridu turned to Manjusha and said " Your brother saved me from hunger and gave me money to start a new life. I regard him as my Guru. His Verses are so sweet. I am now reading his Telugu poetry books " The boat in the sea and the goat on the hill" This is not the time for poetry. said Manju. They silently walked to the Bus station.

The three reached the bus station. Visakha bus was expected in ten minutes.  Varsha and vidisha were waiting for the bus. Maridu bade farewell and turned back to go. Manju called him " Maridu Tell me about Nagireddy.  We have a problem with his brother." Maridu said " I know you want to know how dangerous is Bairreddy. Then listen to  why Nagireddy was arrested. It seems that he was arrested in land grabbing case. The young man was telling you when his father stopped him. He has several cases on him." Maridu was telling.  Manju grew impatient and asked him " Tell me about the cases on Bairreddy? I am not bothered about how many cases are there on Nagireddy." Maridu said " No one knows how many cases are on Nagireddy, No cases are registered against Bairreddy yet."  Manusha was silent Maridu told the blood chilling tale of Nagireddy.

Goon political worker Nagireddy  was arrested for abusing and assaulting a woman. He has been sent to 14-day judicial custody. A woman had objected to him planting political banners on road dividers and traffic intersections. Nagireddy grew furious for her objections  hurled expletives and assaulted the woman. Some body made a video which went viral on social media and drew condemnation, an FIR was lodged and Nagireddy was booked under Indian Penal Code section 354 (assault or use of criminal force on any woman, intending to outrage or knowing it to be likely that he will thereby outrage her modesty)

Until he went underground he claimed to be the executive member of the ruling party’s Kisan Morcha and the co-coordinator of its Youth wing. He uses VVIP stickers on his vehicles to create an atmosphere of fear"  The second case on Nagireddy is that he has been protecting the land grabbed by his mentor boss Simhachalam.

According to the police, the plots were grabbed by Simhachalam- one measuring 0.40 hectares and another measuring 1.50 hectares with estimated value of Rs 10 crores have been grabbed by Simhachalam. They were registered in the name of Simhachalam’s wife. The lands are protected by Nagireddy. They were seized by a team led by Superintendent of Police following orders issued by District Magistrate. The police had to move the earth to confiscate the lands. Maridu stopped when the bus sighted. When the bus stopped Varsha and Manjusha got in. Varsha said " I am happy that you turned a new leaf." The bus moved.

Nightwalk- 12

After finishing dinner  Damini has taken Butchamma, Sarraju, Ramya in her car.  Seshachalam Ahalya and Vidisha hired a taxi to their village. They waved to Bharatavarsha. Varsha waved back. Behind Varsha stood Baireddy waving his hand to Vidisha. The taxi moved. Bharatavarsha sent his sister Manju and Mother Malini in his college car. Since the weather is nice all the boys decided to walk.

Bharatavarsha, Kesava, Basava Agastya Raghava Sandeep and Bairreddy and his friends kanakaroa and Kondalarao were walking on the road. Bharatavarsha was in Andhra traditional dress, dhoti. There is nothing new in that. He is used to it.  Basava and Kesava also wore white dhotis. But it was new to them.  All the three were shining like pearls as they were passing under mercury lights.

Kesava could not manage to keep his dhoti in tact. His dhoti became loose and started falling loosely as he was walking. So he simply wore it like (lungi)Tamil style. "Look with Lungi around his waist and Mrudangam in his hands Kesava looks like a porter, a daily waged labourer" said Kanakarao with his friend Bairreddy. Basava over heard. Bairreddy and his friends started walking apart.

"Look at the wide roads and bright street lamps. Vizag city wears entirely a different look at nights." said Kesava. Kanakarao said " The roads in  America are wider and more beautiful. These roads are nothing." Have you been to America?" asked Kesava.  " No, my distant relative is there. I will go there after my studies. Who is going to stay here! " He muttered.

Why what happened to India?  Is India not enough for your talent?

There is no life here. Life means wide roads, tall buildings. latest cars  earning dollars.

The roads are wide and neat but do you know how the life is! " asked Raghava.

"No, But I have heard good stories I have seen in films" said Kanakarao.

"You have heard good stories but there are bad stories too. Hollywood films show you the moon. Don't get carried away. I went to America, lived there I have seen both life and roads. Roads are wide but lives are congested. You earn in dollors but you must  spend in dollars. You hunt dollors and you are hunted by insecurity. Do you know how much is the house rent? More than fifty percent of your income goes to House rent. You can't spend free there. You must live like a miser.  Don't fantacize" said Raghava.

"When roads are so nice like bedrooms we can live on road side." said Bairreddy. Basava looked piteously at Bairreddy. Basava  Agastya and Kesava , Raghava burst into laughter.

"When my brother becomes MLA. I will go to America." Said Bairreddy

7.5 Lakh Indian Students Went Abroad In 12 months. 68% more Indian students went  abroad this year. Why so many people are going each year?  asked Konda.

Greedy parents, dirty politicians, unequal laws and corrupt judiciary, above all nasty uncivilized people who poke their nose in other affairs unnecessarily.  People judge others without thinking whether they are fit to judge others.

When you are such an intellectual why are you running away? Why don't you try to correct?

Even if I try there is no guarantee. I  don't want to spoil my life on this land. Now a days single young girls are leaving this country for sex. They don't even get sex.

You are selfish you don't want to give life to your country. But other country should give you life. Sex is not guaranteed in other countries. If you marry you can have sex. If you want premaritial sex it is immoral. A bird in hand is worth two in the bush. Mother land is better than other land.

Yes, Visakhapatnam changed a lot. Can you describe the change with a comparison in a sentence in English?" said Raghava.  "The caterpillar city became a butterfly." said Basava. Bairreddy burned with jealous " Like a buffalo becomes a poet" He retorted. Basava smiled and challenged Bairreddy to describe the night in English since he wants to go to America.

Kanakarao said " It is not his cup of tea.  He belongs to politic family not poetic family"

Again Raghava, Basava, Agastya laughed at his English. "Bairreddy's brother Nagireddy is the right hand to the MLA. He is going to be the MLA soon. He will even become the Minister. You can not even get his appointment"  Kesava said " I will become the Prime Minister. you can not even get my appointment"

Baireddy said " Kesava looks like an earth worm but indeed he is a cobra!" While the argument was going on Bharatavarsha was a little ahead. He tried unsuccessfully to stop the autos and cars that pass the way. "Why are you stopping autos the weather is nice let us walk." said Sandeep."The weather is nice but the weather between us is not good. The city is beautiful but our reltions may not be beautiful. They should not turn ugly." said Bharatavarsha. Despite vigorous trials, no taxi no auto stopped. They all started walking together.  They asked Varsha to describe the night. Bharatavarsha told a poem in Telugu. "Ha hha hha...It is easy to say poems in Telugu can you tell a poem in English" asked Bairreddy

They were walking slowly. the power went off. the street lights are off pushing the city into darkness. presently they are walking  under the moon light. It was so calm . Now and then a vehicle passes. Varsha instantly told them a poem in English.

              The quiet night

Walking alone in the quiet street at night

filled with silence and  glimmering light

Eyes can not the path clearly comprehend

When darkness spreads like blanket till street end

The glimmering stars look like sediments

in the cup of sky,  they the night's ornaments

dark clouds emit deadly sparks of lightning

across the sky, lo! the distant hills whitening

The flood of white light the houses reveal

like statues in museum with white veil

The treetops begin swaying in the breeze

My heart begins singing with ease

The night's beauty and silence by heart chosen

in the night's deep silence, peace remains frozen

Basava said "Kudos!"  to the extempore poem. Bairreddy, Sandeep and others  could not believe that it was an extempore presentation. Bharatavarsha looked around the night was splendid. The poet in him was stirred. Moon and Night are always irresistable  inspiriation to the poets. He told another poem.

          Night's mantel

O invisible regent of the night

I hear you walk, oh your foot so light

with peace and silence in your dark mantel

in the quiet of night you amble

The tired world sleep in your lap

men and women their day wrap

with refreshing nightly romance

that leaves them in deep trance

night draws curtains to the sky

night songs are rich mood's dye

they bring silence and silver dew

they the feelings renew and spirits brew

Singing lovely songs you moves towards dawn

When Sun spills beams of light your mantle's gone

       Night is a kite

God loves light God loves night

God made day with heaven's light

and filled it with darkness in the end

night is a kite that flows in the wind

with a string attached at the end

God made man god made woman

He made the man a part of the woman

The woman is filled with kindness

like the night is filled with darkness

In the well of love night is a fish

night is kite that flies in the air

night is a bird that melts in the fire

men are spartan they night never miss

The third poem has made them stop and think. "Very  nice poems we enjoyed the poems." All the friends said unanimously.  "They are not poems. They are sonnets. A 14 lined poem is called Sonnet. If the poem has one line more or less it has no right to the title sonnet. It has a strict rhyme scheme." Said Basava.

"How could you say English sonnets they are very complex?" said Raghava.

Bharatavarsha: Telugu poems demand rhyme in the beginning. Yati in the middle.  There are restrictions on the number of letters in each line besides the length and strength of every letter is determinded my Chandassu or Scheme. Telugu poem is ten times more complex than English.

Everybody was surprised at the strength of Telugu poem. "The true strength of Telugu poem is revelead only when it is compared with English Sonnet. " said Sandeep.

Basava: Varsha was telling about one Telugu poem.  I am sure you don't know about Astavadhanam. I too did not know till recently. I will tell you the process of Astavadhanam then you tell me how much more complex it is than one Telugu poem. In Astavadhanam seven experts pose complex questions and seek solutions in the form of poems of different rhyme schemes .  The avadhani, the performer begins to answer the first questioner. He tells two lines of the poem on the topic the first questioner asked, the second questioner will pose his question, while he was answering the second questioner the third questioner , fourth questioner and so on will set their questions. The performer answers the questions one bye one. During this process the eight questioner a distorter asks irrelevant questions to distort his attention. It is a test to the performer's memory.  A person keeps throwing flowers during the entire process of Avadhanam. The Avadhani or performer should count and remember the exact number of flowers. Thus the performer should answer all the questions in poems in the rhymeschems chosen by the questioner.

Raghava and Sandeep " Now we got the complete idea of Astavadhanam. It is a wonder.

Bairreddy and friends : It is amazing literary feat.. great...

Basava: You did n't listen to me completely. I haven't yet finished. In the end the performer has to present all the poems in a row. Now tell me how complex is telling English sonnets?

They all went mad. " Varsha's talent is beyond compare. He is a wonder of his own time." All friends sarted praising Varsha. Varsha asked them to stop praising his at once. " This is the greatness of Telugu. Avadhanam is Telugu tradition. This is not seen in other languages."

They all clapped cheerfully and wholeheartedly. Bharatavarsha said " There are great scholars like Padmasri Garikipati Narasimharao who is a Sahastravadhani. We should not forget to mention their names in this auspicious occasion. Telugu people feeling proud of Telugu and joining hands to clap and glorify Telugu is more amazing than any kind of Avadhanam. All Telugu scholars bless us." said Varsha.

What about English literature Isn't it  greater than Telugu literature?

Today's youth don't read to form any opinions on literature and culture.  They are either carried away by films or  brainwashed by our own education system which downplays our language, culture and literature such as epics. You are no different Raghava,  Tell me which English books you have read and in what way they are greater than Telugu books?"

Raghava had confusion. He knew well that he read nothing. He also knew that Bharatavarsha is a well read man. In that confusion he blurted out Shakespeare which is a common name. He then stumbled and stuttered and said "Canterbury Tales"

Varsha began "Raghava don't know and most of you don't know Canterbury Tales. I will tell you briefly two stories and you can decide what kind of book it was."

Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales is a collection of 24 stories. 31 pilgrims going to St. Thomas Becket (Canterbury Church) 90 miles from London stay at the Tabard Inn in London. Jeffrey Chaucer organizes a story contest where everyone has to tell a story for fun. He says that those who win will get a free meal on the return journey as a reward. He thought that  each pilgrim would tell four stories (two on departure and two on arrival) and thought that 120 stories should be written.

But only twenty-four told stories. It also contains unfinished stories. The cook's story is an unfinished story. He tells half the story because he fell off his horse while drunk. Chaucer did not complete this story. Canterbury stories have a message to convey. The Second Nun's Story, The Doctor's Story, The Warrior's Story. First listen to the doctor's story briefly "Virginius is a gentleman. A corrupt judge named Appius, who wants his daughter Virginia at all costs because of her beauty, conspires with a criminal named Claudius. Claudius falsely tells the court that Virginia was his daughter and was kidnapped by him. He orders the father to bring her before the court. The father realizes the judge's conspiracy and goes home, cuts off the daughter's head and gives it to the judge.

Some consider Rome to be the birthplace of Christianity. By reading the story of the second nun, we can learn how Christianity was propagated in Rome. Before the advent of Christianity, they were following their own religion called Roman religion. In 13th century Christian nuns used to do anything for converting people into Christianity.  They used to tell such stories and lure innocent people into Christianity.  Canterbury stories reflect the extreme Christian propaganda of that time period.   Later when Bharat Varsha told the story of Second Nun, Raghava was shocked. His friends were a bit confused. Meanwhile they got a van. All got into the van.  Bharatvarsha sat in the front beside the driver. remaining sat behind. The vehicle was moving on.  Raghava Byireddy and Sandeep were unable to connect to the beautiful classical language used by Bharatavarsha. Basava understood that they are used to the  indecent  language and style of modern Telugu movies.  He started narrating the story of second nun in Andhra film style.

Roman woman Cecilia is newly married to Valerian. She wants to keep her virginity even after marriage (and then why did she get married?) She tell her husband on the first night I will tell you a secret   if you promise not to cheat on me . The husband who entered the room  on the first night felt that his  Fuses blown off after listening to the secret. She told coolly "My virginity will be protected by an angel, if you put your hand on me , your head will shatter  into pieces."

Hearing that, crazy yokel husband said, "If you show me the angel, I will believe you." So far so good but the wastrel has given the reigns to her.  She replies smartly the angel will appear only if you change your religion," the dull wits agrees to that condition and changes his religion. Whether he saw the angel or not no one ever knew. But that halfwits has smart brother. In deed he is over smart who buys a sweater in Andhra and goes to Kashmir to try it. One day his nostrils get sweet scent from the newly wed couple’s room. He asks what is that? Here screen play and direction titles will be shown.  A second later the brother and his wife are seen biting his ears. They begin to talk about the angel after a few seconds the words stop and background music starts, their lips begin to move faster and the background music speed increases corresponding the lips. The music gets more and more rapid, the lips move faster and faster, Valerine’s brother’s eyes grow wider and wider finally when the music stops, his mouth is opened wide.

After hearing everything, the younger brother said, god damn this is your scheme, and  it is a decent sketch.  I will buy each a scent  bottles if you dorp this plan.  If we change your religion, we will be slaughtered (killed)! He said. Bravo,  my brother asked the question I couldn't ask,  thought the elder brother.  What should we do now said Valerine.  Cecilia said leave that problem to me, it's not a problem at all, you can relax. Here is another twist. Now the interval. After the interval everyone is watching with suspense "After death you will have a good birth" it convinces. The dream shows that you have died and gone to God. Latakkani falls. (Now the situational song .. the goddess who showed the way ) After obeying, the younger brother converts. Now the femily sentimental scene. All go to the temple of Jupiter, two brothers say I am a plant of Jupiter. Burns to the king. He orders the executioner Maximus to "behead them both". When the king leaves, Cecilia shows him all the variations on the Variation Star. But he doesn't give in. Then the preaching begins. She shows him the stranger in him. Maximus and his whole family are converted by that blow. (Here's the group song.) It would be good if you put it) The king who knows about the matter asks Cecilia to raise her head

After the interval everyone  watches with curiosity and suspense how cecilia solves the problem. She says to the younger brother "After death you will go to God and have a good birth"   She shows the dream that he has died and gone to God.  (Now the situational song.) The younger one obeys  valerine After obeying, the younger brother converts. Now the femily sentimental scene. All go to the temple of Jupiter, two brothers say I don't pray to Jupiter. The kings saw all this

He orders the executioner Maximus to "behead them both". When the king leaves, Cecilia shows the executioner Maximus  all the variations of Mr. beans.  But he doesn't give in. Then the preaching begins. She shows him the combined  skills of Schwarzenegger , Tom cruise and Rajinikanth.   Maximus and his whole family are converted by that blow. (Here's the group song.)

The king, knowing about it, ordered Cecilia to be beheaded. The executioner gives three strokes but the head is not completely severed.  Here is another twist. Law does not agree to the fourth stroke.  With that the executioner leaves.  Cecilia starts preaching and converting After  three days of preaching she will stop and her eyes stand still.   violin music starts  slowly  , the camera rotates 360 degrees slowly ,  gradually the music gets rapid and the camera turns faster.  the audience thinks that the movie is over  then the first night bed scene is showed  and the titles appear.

The audience in the van got awestruck.  A moment later they started laughing and clapping violently because the same story is narrated in cinema style with screen play. Cinema is the weakness of Indians particularly Andhrites. Cinema is the inspiration and respiration it it the heart beat of Telugu people. This excessive adoration in other words slavery is one of reasons why they lost their culture. The van reached Ananandanilayam.

Bhuvanavijayam-11

The morning haze covered the city of Destiny like a blanket. The sun rays gently lifted the morning haze; two winged visitors , basking in the warmth of sun parched  on a high on the rocky creek that lay at the shore. The visitors are Great knot and her baby listed as an 'endangered' species.  It has its breeding habitat in Tundra in northeast Siberia. These friends went to the different coasts in southern Asia.  It is warm here.  said the mother knot.  off course, but we are alone here.  we should have gone with our friends. replied the baby knot.  "They went to the undisturbed stretch of the Kakinada  beach but I love this city." While the mother bird was speaking ...

A journalist was waiting patiently as he zoomed his lens on the birds, waiting for the "perfect" shot. The mother bird saw the man behind the bush. The mother bird said fly and fluttered her wings, soon rose into the sky the baby flew along with the mother. Flying close to mother the baby wondered " oh! this huge rock looks like Dolphin." "Oh ! come on my dear, this hill is  called the Dolphin nose.

Oh beautiful city of destiny

Once witness to the British tiranny

oh Jewel of the east coast

How many beaches you host?

Dolphin nose  what a hill

that offers wonderful thrill

Oh dolphin shaped rock

India's oldest dock

You had witnessed the war

in eighteen o' four (1804)

Between British and the French

Let's fly over the city until Lunch

Dolphin's nose is a huge rocky head which is 174 meters high and 358 meters above sea level. The powerful beacon of the light house set on this rock at sea directs ships 65 km away. In 1804 British and French forces fought the Battle of Vizagapatam near this hill. Visakhapatnam has the coast line of 135 km that hosts several beaches. The city is surrounded by beautiful villages and green fields. The two Great knots flew over the "City of Destiny" and the "Jewel of the East Coast" renowned for being home to the oldest shipyard in all of India. They have watched the plethora of manmade wonders and in the evening they were flying over the municipal auditorium

***

As it is getting darker and darker the electric bulbs hanging on the Municipal auditorium were shining brighter and brighter. The auditorium stole the look of a dancer with curvaceous body. It was enticing the beholders like a nymph with the lips of bimba fruit and lotus eyes. The interior of the auditorium was so spacious that a foot ball ground could be fit in that. With red carpets , beautiful wall panels with rich designs and lighting the interior is vying with the exterior. The soft red carpets are rendering people barefooted. craving for the touch of the carpets some people are walking barefooted on the carpets. Even the sofas near the dais look like they belong to the Sri krishna devaraya's royal court. The chairs are not ordinary . they are designer chairs. Nothing is ordinary there because the auditorium hosts an extra-ordinary programme with extraordinary men.

The auditorium was filled with men of letters , poets, writers and scholars. They all came with their families , wives and children, One can imagine how interesting could be the program? How talented is the man who is going to take their interests? The hall was filled with people sporting multi-coloured gear. They are sat in the relaxed setting. The hall looked like a tulips garden with people in gear.

One hand the television and visual media reporters , print media journalists and politicians are waiting for the beginning of the literary program as if they were waiting for the climax of a suspense movie. On the other hand the a few wastrels who entered the auditorium for pass time were spending by noisy talk. The worst of them all who has the face of a thief prowling in the temple in a bid to steal the idols of God was talking loosely. The young men in the group were engaged in nasty prattling and awkward grinning.

Basava arrived at the auditorium in white traditional dress. All his friends attended the dramatic literary discourse where the real life scholars appear on stage to play the roles of great poets of the court of Sri Krishna devaraya.

The thief -face drew nasty comparison between Telugu and English underscoring the beauty of the latter. The comments did not escape the ears of Basava who sat two rows behind him. He fired like a gun " who is this colonial ghost who is unworthy of worthy words demonstrating his worth with worthless talk." The thief face became dazed. Basava saw him and fired a second round " The thief face lost his face and became faceless, when you talk baseless you become faceless. Basava's friends were flabbergasted with series of rhetorical reproaches. Basava has a paradigmatic change in attitude and manners. They looked at his clothes. He is wearing traditional white dress. He looks like pearl.

The time was about be 6 O' clock. The Literary Drama that mirrors the court of the famed Hampi Vijayanagar King whose love of literature flickers like a flame through the history , whose contribution to literature is unparalleled, whose encomium on Telugu still flow like a perennial river in the hearts of Telugu people, is about to begin. Bharatavarsha whose poetic prowess made rounds in the visual and print media has drawn the attention of noted celebrities to the program. The front row was filled with the media reporters with cameras on stands to record and telecast the program. It shows the significance of any program. After the media in the first row seated were Bharatavarsha's mother Malini, Varsha's sister Manjusha, Malini's friend Damini, Basava's sister Ramya and her friends.

Behind them Agastya , Vidisha, Kesava Raghava, Bairredy were seated. In the third row seated were Basava's mother and father Buchhamma and Sarraju, Vidisha's mother and father Ahalya and Seshachalam, "The comely Basava was unable to sit calmly." said Vidisha. " Yes with his attire and satire on miscreants he looks like an authentic scholar of Telugu." said Manjusha. Bunny looks very funny in this attire said Raghava. " No more I am Bunny , I am the spirit of Shiva and the son of Bucchamma I am Basava" It was an amazing scene for his parents.

The curtain rose showing the stars of the night. The eight poets in the court of Krishna devaraya appeared in seated in old styled court seats specially made for the program. The King was also present in addition to the eight. "This is a concept drama is named after the king's court Bhuvanavijayam which had been popular in 1952 strikes back" said a journo to the camera man. suddenly following the signal of Bharatavarsha Basava and Kesava got on to the stage. The two stars disappeared from the clouds of audience appeared on the stage.

The program has to be introduced to the audience. Basava started addressing the audience. No sooner did he start speaking than the mike got mute. somebody on the stage said " call the electrician he will correct the mike" Basava yelled in a language hardly in the reach of the ordinary. It is the grand old Telugu language of the olden days. "Basava unleashed" shouted Agastya. He is least expected to speak in this language. The rhythmic classical beat of the language tinged with humour sounded like " I came dashing on to the dais wearing a new dress to address the audience, but I can't. Come like lightening to redress mike problem. Remove the mess and bless the program. The Electrician came like a lightning and adjusted the mike with lightning speed.

Basava began speaking "Bharatavarsha a renowned scholar and in Telugu and masters in History rose to fame by dint of hard work is organizing this Literary program which had once shone like a diamond. He ready to bite the bullet for glorification of his mother tongue which has been extripated by media by its own people. I bow to the noble soul the president of Telugu Literary Organization Mr. Paidiraju. It is a great opportunity for for scholars and greater opportunity for the lovers of Telugu to feast their ears and the greatest opportunity to dilettante and dabbler like me to stand beside the towering fame of Telugu Bharatavrsha. Scholars presence is always a motivation. It is an inspiration that drives away ignorance. Long live Telugu!!! Victory! Victory !! Victory!!! to Telugu.

Hardly had Basava finished than the astrology scholar, Pandit Chandrasekhar adumbrated the concept of Bhuvanavijayam. Bhuvanavijayam was the name of Royal court of Hampi king. In 1952 a wealthy man called Anjaneyulu had the idea of a hosting the grand literary discourse of of the Royal court of Srikrishna devaraya. He chose real time great poets to represent the 8 jewels (poets) of 16th century instead of drama artists. Renowned Telugu poets of that time period Viswanatha Satyanarayana were invited to participate in that program. High court then justice acted as the King. Unlike the drama artists the poets came without make-up and without script. The script was needless because they were poets themselves and the discourse was extempore. Since then Bhuvanavijayam was played all over Andhra and abroad where Telugu diaspora prevailed. Newyork, Pitsburg, Newjersy, Detroit, Chicago, Los Angeles , San Francisco. Bhuvanavijayam rang like a temple bell and Telugu raged like fire but later when education was Anglicized the decline of Telugu began. It reached abyss when entertainment was anglicised. Now we relaunch the program with the help of Bharatavarsha. I hope this program will inspire the Telugu people and reanimate Telugu. Victory to Telugu!

When Paidiraju finished Kesava started playing Mrudangam ( double headed drum), Bharatavarsha sat beside him with Veena ( stringed instrument like lyre) Basava started singing the prayer song which is a part of tradition. The program thus began traditionally entertained the audience thoroughly. Bharatavarsha played the role of Peddana, the grand old timeless poet. The scene of poet Krishna Misra who visited the Bhuvanavijayam was played quite naturally. Krishna misra who challenges the king into poetic discourse and demands that the king should touch his feet if he can not win. Thus Krishna Misra insulted the King. The soldier in proximity quickly pulls his sword to cut the poet's head. But Krishna mishra never withdraws. He was as aggressive as before. He says poetry is a war of words not of swords, if the king is talented enough he should be ready for a verbal war. The king faces utterly insulting words of the poet. Krishnaraya your name is propagated as a scholar king. If it is not a lie come forward to attack me , don't send your soldier onto me." If you can't put your head to me feet , you have a choice you can have your head made of gold and offer it to me . I will wear it on my foot." At that point enters Allasani peddana , who was not yet a court poet. Peddana ( Bharatavarsha ) finds fault with Krishna misra. "If you have no court manners and etiquette you can not be considered a scholar" Krishna misra beats back " You are not a court poet yet, you are an out-sider you don't have the status to argue with me." Krishan devaraya appoints him as court poet instantly and a fierce battle follows. It was all extempore Bharatavarsha in playing for Peddana argued with a renowned scholar and famous film writer Gopalakrishna. The argument was quite esoretic and moving. It stole the hearts of the audience. Though Timmana, Dhurjati, Surana, Tenali Ramakrishna were played by versatile writers that did not catch the ears of the audience. The fierce argument between Peddana and Krishna misra went viral in the media. Everyone of the audience knew that they are using their own talent not repeating what is recorded in the history. Gopalakrishna was 60 Bharatavarsha was merely 24. The audience thought that The ram was dashing a mountain. Bharatavarsha proved otherwise. He kept the fame of Allasani Peddana, (1510-1575AD), who is known as Andhra Kavita Pitamahudu or Grandfather of Andhra Poetry. The programme ended.

Bharatavarsha family and friends were moving to the hotel near by on foot. Bucchamma and sarraju were shell shocked to see the paradigmatic change in Basava. while accolades are showring on Basava and Bharatavarsha, Raghava's friend Aditya spoke against Telugu, " What purpose this language serve? why should one learn Telugu at all? Look Raghava has gone to the US. I am doing in films. if you do it films you will rule" Bairreddy, and Sandeep supported him. An upcoming actor Naresh who was going with them said to Aditya" Look , I don't know your name , my father was a minister , I went to the Us. I also acted in four films as hero's friend. My father's tenure is over , he is not a minister. He is not ruling. I went to America and did all odd jobs. much against my will. I never ruled not spent lavishly. Indians in America spend very niggardly life to save dollars. And finally films , yes I acted in films , only four films and my film career stopped. Remember a good poet like Bharatavarsha rules the hearts of people.

When they reached the hotel they all sat at the tables. The dishes took them into a new world. There was a pleasant chat at each table. Bharatavarsha, Basava, Kesava, Agastya were at a table. Telugu University administrative officer who was eating at Bharatavarsha's table invited Bharatavarsha to attend the program - Discussion on novels, He also invited kesava for playing mrudangam.

Millionaire American Author of 90 Books

Poolabala with Ms. Catheryne Maddox and Mr. Kumar

She is 80. She is from Michigan. Her name is Catheryne Maddox. She visited my village home today. She loves books . She is a writer herself. She has written 90 books.  She can't speak or read Telugu.  She stepped into my study and saw my books in the shelf and touched them gingerly. She carried them in her hands as if  she were carrying a baby.  She wanted to have my magnum opus  Bharatavarsha. She wanted to keep it in her shelf.  She was so happy while receiving  Bharatavarsha.  She went to Afghanistan to serve some poor people with whom she had only internet friendship if love comes from the bottom of the heart people behave like that. She spent an hour in my house and left lasting love.

Today's students

Whenever I find any interesting news I immediately translate it into French and German

I also want to my students to do the same. But unfortunately students never think of doing such things.  They don't even read such things written in blogs. I want to tell them " If you have rich ambitions it is not enough because rich ambitions fail with poor activities"

If you only attend the class is it enough?

Remember your language skills correspond with your activities.
